Book recommendations in English

Here we take a look at some book recommendations that you can read in English. We give a brief summary of each of them and an idea of what it would be like to read them as an English learner.

James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

Level A2 – This classic children’s story has a simple but clever storyline and appeals to readers of all ages. The simple vocabulary and grammar mean that you won’t have to pick up your dictionary all the time. Once you have read this one then you can move on to some of Dahl’s other books; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG or the Fantastic Mr. Fox.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the night-time by Mark Haddon

Level A2 – The book is about a 15-year-old boy called Christopher who has an extraordinary brain. He likes maths but hates people and only communicates with his pet rat, Toby. One day he comes home from school and he finds his neighbour’s dog dead. He is the main suspect as he doesn’t get along with people so he decides to investigate who killed the dog. This is an easy read as the author wrote it for teenagers with language that’s quite simple. There are also some nice illustrations to help you understand the text if it’s not obvious. The author has a particular style that will make you laugh on one page and cry the next

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Level B1 – Harry Potter is universally known and the grammar or vocabulary isn’t complicated. If you’ve already read some books in your native language then you’ll find that it’s less of a chore to read and more relaxing. Starting with the first book is a good option as it’s not too long and it will help you build your confidence.

The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho

Level B1 – The book is relatively short at around 167 pages so makes it an ideal read for English learners. The theme is about finding your purpose and destiny in life. It’s about Santiago a shepherd boy from Spain. He keeps having the same dream about treasures buried deep beneath the Pyramids of Egypt. After meeting an old king who offers him some advice and magic stones he sets off on a journey to pursue his dream. This is an amazing book and the storytelling is beautiful. It’s full of philosophy and wisdom so it’s a great read.

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Level B1 / B2 – Students in the United States often read and study this book in English classes at school and university. It’s about a 12-year-old Mexican-American girl and how she adjusts to life in the US. The book unfolds through a series short stories written in a diary-style so the language is quite simple. At 103 pages it’s ideal for learning some day-to-day vocabulary.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Level B1 / B2 – This book is for hopeless romantics, it’s humorous and witty but at the same time very sad. It follows the love story of Augustus and Hazel who both meet at a cancer support group for teens. The vocabulary is edgy and has a young vibe which makes it a lively and appealing read. Also, there are also plenty of metaphors to sink your teeth into.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Level B1 / B2 –This is a heartwarming, touching and funny story about an ordinary office worker who has a very boring life. She always has the same routine and survives on eating frozen pizza! Eleanor tells the story from her point of view and follows her as she learns to adapt and grow. It takes you through a whole range of emotions and you won’t want it to end.

Some more Book recommendations in English at a higher level

1984 by George Orwell

Level C1 – This is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn more about the world and improve their English. A masterpiece of imprisonment and rebellion where war is peace and freedom is slavery. Big Brother is watching you and the Thought Police are words that have entered our vocabulary because of this classic dystopian novel. The language is not complicated but there will be at least a few words which are confusing for beginners. You could always read with someone else who knows English better or have a dictionary at hand.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Level C1 – In the deep south of the United States which talks about the life of an African American family in the early 20th century. The book may be quite challenging to read because of its sad plot but overall the language is easy to understand. It’s always been a popular read and is a classic in American modern literature.

The Kiterunner by Khaled Hosseini

Level C1 – A classic novel of the last decade. It talks about the life of two best friends in Afghanistan who go through many challenges together. It’s a story of redemption, relationships, guilt, and the uncompromising nature of the past. It’s easy enough to read and the language is not overly complicated but it is certainly for readers at a higher level. It’s an ideal choice for anyone preparing for the IELTS exam.
