A positive approach to language learning

How can you take a positive approach to language learning?

Taking a positive approach to language learning can be the key to your success. Learning a new language can be hard going and you deserve to be kind to yourself and appreciate what you have rather than what you don’t.

Jon and Gideon talk about ten different expressions in a recent podcast episode. The aim is to help you develop a positive mindset. Here are five expressions that can help motivate you with your language learning:

End on a positive note (start on a positive one too!)

Ending on a positive note could mean that you reflect on what you have just learned and now (hopefully!) remember. By doing this you will feel that you have accomplished something so it should help inspire you to carry on and do some more.

Is your glass half full or half empty?

Everything in life depends on your point of view, do you see things in a positive or negative light? Of course if you see your glass half full then you have a positive impression of things in general. This expression can remind you that there are always two ways of looking at things. So, next time you start looking at your glass and think that you could have more in there then remember you have at least half left!

Patience is a virtue

Waiting for things can be hard at the best of times but it can really pay off sometimes. Maybe you have been offered a job but it’s not quite what you want or your waiting for stock on a new pair of trainers that will make you run faster. Whatever it is, sometimes it’s just best to wait and you will reap the rewards later otherwise you could regret a rash decision.

When life gives you lemons… (then make lemonade!)

Life can be hard sometimes and leave a bitter taste in your mouth but you can always make a positive out of a negative. When you encounter a difficult situation that makes you feel bad then search for the positive. There’s always lemonade to be made!

The sky’s the limit

This expression focuses on the fact that you shouldn’t limit yourself and just go for it! This is not always easy to follow and may mean you have to leave your comfort zone. If this seems like a daunting prospect then think about making small but incremental steps. Pushing your boundaries can help and will make it easier for you to try new things, so why not give it a go?

What else can you do?

There are of course many more expressions that you can take inspiration from and our podcast episodes should help. A positive approach to language learning is a mindset and will help you reach your goal of becoming fluent in English.
